No microphone this month, sorry, but this time I'd like to draw attention to a book that will be published in May: 'Prins On The Road', by sound engineer and photographer Jan Prins.
The book is an account of his work as a sound engineer for many nationally and internationally renowned musicians, including Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Dionne Warwick, The Trampps, Fats Domino, Nina Hagen, Herman Brood, and many others.
Jan had already begun training as a photographer when he decided to make sound engineering his profession. He always took his camera with him, and so for years he was able to photograph the artists he worked with up close. His stories and photos are absolutely worthwhile and offer a glimpse into the world of backstage, which many will be unfamiliar with.
Jan is also a former colleague of mine; our paths crossed regularly in the past, although we usually worked for competing Dutch sound companies—he for Focus and Rider, and I for Ampco and smaller companies. We both often worked as monitor mixers, which puts you much closer to the artists than when you're handling the sound system, as Front Of House engineer.
Jan approached me to design his book, and I've been busy with that lately. It's been an interesting experience, with the only downside being that my own second book has been delayed. Now that 'Prins On The Road' is almost finished, I can focus on my own book again, which I hope to finish in May.
Jan's book will be released in May, and pre-sales have already started. It's published by the Aldus Book Company; here's the link: https://www.aldusboekcompagnie.nl/product/22281761/jan-prins-prins-on-the-road
Many types of microphones feature in my book Witnesses of Words. More information about that can be found at www.witnessesofwords.com
